"PRESENTATION" The process of showing and explaining the content of a topic to an
audience.
"PRESENTATION SKILL" The ability to present a structured, prepared and speech-based means of communicating information, ideas, or arguments to a group of interested people in
order to inform or persuade them. WHY LOVE2SPEAK WORKS Communication is the most important skill of true success. When I was a young man, I developed an interest in Communication. Communication is the most important
measure of how advanced society is. Better communication is the key to better relationships between two people, two cultures or countries around the world. My Father's patent
work in electronics and semiconductors sparked me to get my ham radio license. I learned the technical details of transmitting and receiving information. Anyone who listens to the radio knows
there are two bands, FM (frequency modulation) and AM (amplitude modulation). The station often announces it has "50,000 watts of power." What does this mean?
Well, "watts of power" is how much raw energy the radio station is generating. This raw energy is called a "carrier wave" because it will
carry something with it, information the radio station wants to send to its listeners (music, news, advertisements). Think of this raw energy as a fast-moving river going from a starting point (the
radio station) toward some destination (the listener). The information it carries is called "modulation." Modulation is a boat full of information being carried from the radio station (the
"transmitter") by the river of raw energy (the "carrier wave") to its destination at the dock (the "receiver") where it picked up by the customer (the "listener"). What does AM and FM
mean? You already know that M stands for "modulation" which is the information. "A" stands for "amplitude." Amplitude is "volume" like the volume control on your radio or television.
Like your volume control, amplitude makes information louder or softer, stronger or weaker. Programs are much more interesting when the sounds you hear are different volumes, birds singing or doors
banging. "F" stands for "frequency." Frequency is the different notes played on a piano, guitar or other musical instrument, or a singer singing a song. The song would be
very boring if everyone played and sang the same note. What is the difference between information transmitted by AM and FM?. In simple terms for this work, AM is better for
sending noisier information longer distances, while FM is better for sending more peaceful, clear information shorter distances. An "AM-type boat" is good for carrying information longer distances in
rough seas. Think of a baby suddenly screaming in the distance. Which would you use to hear that baby better? AM. An "FM-type boat" is good for carrying information shorter distances
in calm seas. How do you want to hear which chapters to read for your next test, a string quartet, who is in charge of your job promotion, or how to win a million dollars in the lottery? FM.
Telling your kids to do the chores again? AM. (You keep turning the volume up, they keep turning it down.) Telling friends and family you love them? FM. (Music to their ears.) Today there is a third type of radio beside AM and FM. It is called DM, "digital modulation" or more commonly "satellite radio." Digital is discussed in more detail below,
but it is simply flipping a switch on an off very quickly. "On" and "off" are the only two choices. Digital modulation has the best qualities of AM and FM. It can go very long distances
with no noise and crystal-clear information. Digital modulation does have its own unique problem, a state called "clipping." When digital modulation is pushed past its limits into clipping, the
information it carries suddenly goes from zero noise to all noise without warning. Imagine singing birds transformed into a screaming jet in your ears. This state of
mind sounds strangely familiar to many people with a public speaking assignment: "I have to speak = I'm scared to death." We will refer to this again. You can improve your presentation
